Inter and AC Milan, the optioned to the title in the Serie A of Italy

Napoli’s heavy defeat against Empoli certifies their farewell in the fight for a championship title that remains in the city of Milan thanks to Inter’s resounding victory over Mourinho’s AS Roma and AC Milan’s suffering against Lazio in this thirty-fourth round of Serie A.

Although not mathematically, Napoli’s options have vanished after a dramatic defeat against Empoli when they had the game on track. The fight is reduced to the two Milanese teams with four games to go, five for Inter.

The Milanese teams faced off against the Romans and those from northern Italy emerged victorious in both matches, albeit in radically different ways.

The ‘neroazzurri’ team overwhelmed Roma at the San Siro 3-1. Only at the end were Mou’s men able to close the gap in a very complete match for the Interistas, who did not make a single mistake in defense and who proved to be the team in better shape at the moment.

Napoli starred in the drama of the day. In the 80th minute they won 0-2 against Empoli, but ended up succumbing in less than ten minutes by 3-2. The first goal conceded left the players undaunted, the second -after a mistake by Meret, the goalkeeper- made them react. The team went on the attack, desperate for victory, and Empoli killed all the ‘partenopei’ hopes on the counterattack.

‘Juve’ took advantage of this defeat by Spalletti’s men to close the gap and stay just one point behind. The Turin team pulled for effectiveness and a comeback to beat Sassuolo (1-2) with goals from Dybala and Kean, the latter in the final minutes.

AS Roma and Lazio left their markers the same as last day. The ‘Fiore’ had the opportunity to overcome both teams and place fifth, moving Roma to the Conference League and leaving Lazio out.

But Salernitana, in their incessant struggle to avoid relegation, surprised the ‘Viola’ team and snatched their promotion to the European positions (1-2).

Atalanta, with one game in hand, could rejoin after their victory against Venice (1-3) and the ‘punctures’ by AS Roma, Lazio and Fiorentina.

No team has given up their chances of salvation. Venice, Genoa and Salernitana occupy the dangerous positions and Cagliari is the first out of danger, but everything can happen in these four remaining days in which there are direct confrontations.

Genoa beat Cagliari (1-0) in the closing stages, a result that keeps the hopes of the Genoese alive and complicates the lives of those from Sardinia, who, if they had won, would have left their permanence very much on track.

Salernitana also won, remaining tied on 25 points with Genoa and three units with Cagliari, but with one game in hand, the one that remains to be played against Venice, who with 22 points are bottom after succumbing to Atalanta.

Salernitana could get out of relegation by beating Venencia, while the Venetians could once again get into the fight for salvation.

In addition, Bologna and Udinese tied at two and settle in the middle of the table; Verona and Sampdoria tied at one; and Torino beat Spezia 2-1.

With four days to go before the end of the Italian domestic championship, everything is still open. The champion will leave the city of Milan, the European positions still have no owner and nobody wants to say goodbye without fighting in the highest category. (D)
