WTA founder Billie Jean King did not support the removal of the Russians from Wimbledon 2022
One of the founders of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), American Billie Jean King, opposed the removal of Russian athletes from Wimbledon in 2022. She posted a related post on Twitter.
“One of the founding principles in founding the WTA was that every girl in the world would have a place to play if she was good enough to play. I stuck with it in 1973 and I stick with it now. I cannot support the removal of individual athletes from any tournament just because of their nationality, ”she said.
King noted that she understands the pressure the organizers of the tournament had to face and how difficult the decision was.
The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) also condemned the decision of the organizers of Wimbledon, calling it a manifestation of discrimination based on nationality. The association recalled that the admission of athletes should be based on the rating.
On April 20, Wimbledon organizers announced that they would not allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the tournament. Thus, the second racket of the world Russian Daniil Medvedev will not be able to perform on it.
