Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) explained that his team had “planned the attack on the first port” after beating Colombian Sergio Higuita (Bora-Transgohe) in the sixth stage of the Volta a Catalunya, ending in Cambrils ( Tarragona) this Saturday, and placed second in the general classification, 16 seconds behind his breakaway partner thanks to a 133-kilometre breakaway.
“If we let the group reach the top of the first pass (Coll de les Llebres, first category) there was a chance that the stage would be decided by sprint. With the team we talked about breaking the race there and then trying with me”, added the Olympic champion, who started the stage ninth overall, at a press conference.
Regarding the options he has to storm the victory on Sunday in Barcelona, Carapaz considered that “the final circuit (in Montjuïc) always decides a lot, the descent is complicated and the port is hard”. And he assured that they will try to “win the race”, but that a podium “would also be very good”.
Stage for Carapaz in the Volta a Catalunya
This joy can mark a turning point in the Ecuadorian season. “I did not have a good start, it was very complicated. Seeing myself there being in the fight for the general classification and winning a stage is positive for me for the rest of the season”, he sentenced. (D)
