The head of the RPL Ashot Khachaturyants said that several teams may withdraw from the championship of Russia
President of the Russian Premier League (RPL) Ashot Khachaturyants said that several clubs could end their performance in the national championship this season ahead of schedule. It is reported by TASS.
According to him, a number of teams are at risk of withdrawing from the tournament due to the possible departure of legionnaires after a pause associated with national team matches. The head of the RPL added that this applies to clubs from the middle of the standings, but did not specify which ones.
On March 7, the International Football Federation (FIFA) allowed legionnaires to unilaterally suspend contracts with RPL clubs. After that, foreigners began to leave the league en masse. Krasnodar suffered the most, from which five legionnaires left.
Earlier on March 22, Khachaturyants announced that the RPL clubs supported the expansion of the league. The number of participants in the tournament is planned to increase from 16 to 18 teams. The changes should take effect from the 2022/2023 season.
