San Sebastián, Markina, Gernika and Hondarribia will host the Jai Alai World Tour

The pediments of San Sebastián, Markina, Gernika and Hondarribia will be the venues for the four Grand Slam tournaments that make up the 2022 Jai Alai World Tour circuit of punta basket, a competition in which they will take part the best ballplayers of the specialty between the months of may and october.

The event aims to maintain the “unexpected unprecedented success” and the extraordinary response of the public to the recently concluded Winter Series held in Gernika. This has been expressed by its organizers in today’s presentation, Wednesday, in Bilbao, with the participation of the Minister of Culture, Bingen Zupiria.

“You have to give a new focus because just with a ball game we can’t bring people to the fronton. It will be a mixture of the best pelota players with a good show”, underlined the head of the company Jai Alive, Mikel Egiguren, on that music and light show that sets each function.

The competition will start on May 14 at Carmelo Balda from San Sebastian, where it will conclude on June 11, and will continue in Markina-Xemein (June 18-July 16), Guernica (July 23-August 16) and Hondarribia (July 15-October 1).

The winning couples of each Grand Slam, or seconds in case of repeated winners, will play a Final Four at venue and dates yet to be determined. In addition, in December, an individual championship is scheduled in the Biscayan town of Berriatua.

Each tournament will be played by six couples who will be divided into two groups of three. The first two will face each other in the semifinals, first against second, and the winners will play for the title in the final.

As announced by the organizers, eight of the 12 pelotaris, the best in the table, will be fixed in all the tournaments, and the remaining four will be chosen by the companies before each competition “based on the merits or moments of form”. In total there will be “between 16 and 18” who will take part in the circuit.

The forwards Aritz Erkiaga, Iñaki Osa Goikoetxea, Diego Beaskoetxea and Jean Olharan and the defenders Imanol López, Unai Lekerika, Nicolás Etcheto and Jon Zabala have their place guaranteed.
