Manchester City tops Deloitte revenue ranking for the first time

For the first time in its history, the Manchester City ranked first in the ‘Football Money League’ deloitte, which ranks clubs based on income generated by football. The ranking includes the 20 highest earning teams in world football.

the team of Premier Leaguewhich emerged stronger than its rivals from the health crisis according to this British auditing firm, thus joins Real Madrid, barcelona and Manchester Unitedthe only other clubs to have held the top spot in this ranking since its inception.

City’s revenue soared to €644.9m (£3.5bn at current rates) for the 2020-2021 season, up 17%, which took them from sixth in the standings to first.

However, Deloitte points out that some of City’s businesses – which account for nearly half of the club’s revenue – are controversial, as several key sponsors, such as the shirt’s and the Etihad Stadium, are directly linked to the club’s owners.

According to the ranking, the citizens generated 4.2 million euros (about R$23 million) more than Real Madrid (2nd). The Top 5 is completed, in that order, by Bayern Munich (3rd), Barcelona (4th) and Manchester United (5th).

In total, eleven English clubs appear in the top twenty positions, which confirms the Premier League’s financial strength.

The average income of the 20 clubs on the list is 409 million euros (R$ 2.2 billion), with a slight increase compared to the 2019-2020 season, thanks to the televised transmission of games behind closed doors, but the number is 12 % lower than in the 2018-2019 season due to the effects of the health crisis and the partial absence of spectators.

Clubs in the ‘Football Money League’ have lost more than 2 billion euros (R$ 10.9 billion) of income due to the covid-19 pandemic, according to the report of the deloitte.

Premier League clubs have much larger television rights contracts than their competitors in other major European leagues. Differences are therefore likely to widen internationally, Deloitte said.
