With Di Lorenzo cut, Italy summons De Sciglio for European Qualifiers repechage

Juventus full-back Mattia de Sciglio was called up by coach Roberto Mancini to defend Italy in the European Qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.

The decision was made after the cut of Giovanni Di Lorenzo, from Napoli, who suffered a right knee injury. The player felt pain and had to be substituted in Napoli’s victory over Udinese on Saturday.

After undergoing medical examinations, the Italian federation confirmed that the player “will be unavailable for the next matches”.

Di Sciglio, an experienced winger, has 39 appearances for the Italy national team, but his last game for Squadra Azzurra was in June 2019.

Reigning Euro Cup champions, Italy will face North Macedonia in the semi-finals of the European Qualifiers next Thursday. In case of victory, the ‘Azzurra’ takes the winner of the duel between Portugal and Turkey for a spot in the 2022 World Cup.
