Media: Canal + may lose rights to the Premier League. The giant comes into play

For 25 years, the league games have been shown on Canal + television. In the meantime, the Polish league also appeared on the antennas of other channels – incl. TVP, Polsat Sport or the now defunct Orange Sport. Canal + and TVP have the rights to the tournament until the end of next season 2022/23 and it is already speculated who will show the league in the coming years.

Canal + will lose its league? Viaplay sets off for the Polish league

According to the meczyki.pl portal, Canal + may have a very serious rival in the next tender. A rival with whom he has already lost several tenders in recent months. It is the Scandinavian NENT Group, i.e. the owner of the platform. The Swedes have entered the Polish market very much – they are already showing the Bundesliga, the Europa League, the Conference League or the KSW, and in the following years they will take over or Formula 1.

But the appetite of NENT Group does not end there and it intends to start the PKO Ekstraklasa games as well. The Swedes are to present a very strong offer in the upcoming tender. “The Scandinavians take our market very seriously. They want to grow organically and structurally, as evidenced by the expansion of their infrastructure – they are now setting up a second TV studio in ATM in Warsaw” –

That would mean that another record for the cost of television rights to the Premier League is set to be set. Currently, it amounts to PLN 225 million per season. In Ekstraklasa SA they are already rubbing their hands, because the entry of such a serious player means that the league can receive more, perhaps even much more. And Viaplay could also help promote the league to other European markets, as it is the case with. Currently, Viaplay has access to 11 European countries, and in a year there are expected to be 16.

It can also be expected that after the Swedish concern takes over the Premier League, Canal + will fiercely defend its key position in the football offer. The more so because without the league it would have become very poor. For now, apart from the Polish league, Canal + is currently showing the Premier League (which it will lose from next season) and part of the Spanish La Liga and French Ligue 1 matches. The loss would be a blow for C + after which it would be difficult to get up and would mean a large outflow of customers.
