Champions League: Chelsea meets Lille and advances to the quarterfinals

Chelsea fulfilled the mission of sealing their pass to the quarterfinals of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory at Lille, this Wednesday in the second leg of the round of 16, after the English triumph 2-0 on the way to London.

Lille dreamed of a comeback when Turkey’s Burak Yilmaz put his team ahead in the second leg by converting a penalty in the 38th minute, but the reigning European champion put out the fire after with goals from American Christian Pulisic (45+3) and Spaniard César Azpilicueta (71).

Pulisic was the hero of the tie for Chelsea, as he also scored one of the goals in the first leg win.

Chelsea’s qualification for the quarterfinals is a joy for the club in the midst of the complicated situation it has been experiencing in recent weeks, following the sanctions on its Russian owner Roman Abramovich as a result of the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army.

The sale of the club, initially announced by Abramovich, a figure considered close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, was blocked when the businessman’s assets were frozen.

Unaware of extra-sports issues, Chelsea players managed to enter the top eight of this Champions Leaguewhere the London team defends the title won last season.

Third in the table in the Premier League, the Champions League is the Blues’ big chance to achieve great success this season.

For its part, Lille, current champion of France and the last French team in contention in this edition, is dropped from the top European tournament and will now have to focus its efforts on Ligue 1, where it is sixth, seven points behind Nice (3 .°), which currently marks the qualifying zone for the next Champions League.
