This Wednesday, FIFA extended to Ukrainian players the possibility of signing contracts with clubs from other countries without having to wait for the transfer window to open. The initiative had been announced last week, targeting foreign athletes and coaches in Ukraine and Russia.
As Ukraine has declared a general mobilization in which men aged between 18 and 60 must remain in the country, it will be necessary for players to be “authorized to leave in accordance with current rules on cross-border movements of Ukrainian citizens”, FIFA said in a statement.
Each club will be able to receive up to two professionals benefiting from this measure, as detailed in the annex of the regulation on the status of players affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Last week, the FIFA Council suspended the contracts of foreign players and coaches working in Russia and Ukraine until the end of the season.
Russia is isolated in the sporting world and excluded from international competition. The objective of this measure by FIFA is to “facilitate the exit” of all those who have not reached an agreement with their clubs.
These professionals will have the “right to unilaterally suspend their employment contract” until June 30th and will be able to sign with teams from other countries until April 7th.
