Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper signs pre-contract with MLS debutant team

O Borussia Dortmund made official, this Wednesday, the departure of Roman Burki at the end of the season. The Swiss goalkeeper has signed with St. Louis City, debuting in Major League Soccer, until the end of 2025.

“Borussia would like to thank Roman Burki for the seven years he has always given his all. Roman was our number one for many years. He is a great professional, who won titles with us and was part of the team that won the German Cup,” said Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc.

The American team had its debut in the MLS scheduled for 2022. However, with the covid-19 pandemic, the first participation in the championship was postponed to 2023. The Missouri team has already brought two other reinforcements from German football: the Brazilian João Klauss, bought from Hoffenheim, and Czech Tomas Ostrak, who will leave Cologne.

The director of St. Louis, Lutz Pfannenstiel, celebrated the arrival of the 31-year-old: “We are delighted to have a world-class goalkeeper like Roman. His experience will be of great benefit to our club. He is a player who has proven himself during his career and has played in the biggest competitions in the world, such as the Champions League. He will play an important role in passing leadership to our young team.”

Revealed by Young Boys, Burki also played for Switzerland’s Grasshoppers before being sold to Germany’s Freiburg in 2014. The following year, he was transferred to Borussia Dortmund, a club for which he has played 232 games so far. Already this season, Gregor Kobel has been the starter in the position.
