Fighter Alexander Volkov turned down UFC offer to arrive in London early due to illness
Russian mixed-style fighter (MMA) Alexander Volkov explained the refusal of the offer of the leadership of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to arrive in London in advance, where the tournament with his participation will take place. The heavyweight spoke to reporters at a press conference ahead of UFC Fight Night 204.
The 33-year-old Russian thanked the UFC for the offer. He noted that he had been ill with coronavirus and needed a full-fledged training camp before the tournament, which is scheduled for March 19. “They wanted to bring me three weeks before the fight and I needed to train with my sparring partners. I was sure that there would be no problems with a trip to London, ”added the heavyweight.
Volkov arrived in London on 13 March. The UFC expressed concern that the fight of the Russian in the UK could fail for political reasons. The head of the organization, Dana White, allowed Volkov’s fight to be postponed to another date.
The Russian fighter will have a fight with Briton Tom Aspinall. In the previous fight in October 2021, Volkov defeated Marcin Tybura. In total, he has 34 wins and nine losses.
