FIDE banned the national teams of Russia and Belarus from participating in international tournaments
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from tournaments under its auspices. This was reported on the website of the organization.
At the same time, athletes from these countries are allowed to compete in individual FIDE tournaments. The condition is neutral status. The federation said they made a decision based on current recommendations.
At the end of February, many international sports organizations began to impose sanctions on the Russians. In some disciplines, such as football, hockey, cross-country skiing and biathlon, athletes are completely excluded from competition. In motorsport, cycling and tennis, the Russians can continue playing in a neutral status.
Last December, in a duel for the world chess crown, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen outplayed Russian Jan Nepomniachtchi with a score of 7.5:3.5. The defeat of the Russian grandmaster in the decisive match of the World Championship was the largest since 1993.
