Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who visited Moscow last week, met with businessman Roman Abramovich and with the head of the Russian delegation at the talks with Ukraine, presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, RBC reports citing the German newspaper Bild.

According to the publication, Schroeder met with Abramovich on March 10 at the Baltschug Kempinski Hotel, while both participants of the meeting were taken to the hotel through a side entrance. The newspaper does not provide details about the meeting with Medinsky.

It is also noted that on March 14, Schroeder met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Earlier, the European edition of Politico reported on the visit of the ex-chancellor to Moscow. Interlocutors of the online publication said that he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the settlement of the conflict with Ukraine. However, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the alleged meeting of Schroeder with Putin, said that he did not have such information.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, EU, UK, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
