TAS rejects Russian Football Federation’s request against Uefa sanctions

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) rejected this Tuesday the request of the Russian Football Federation (FUR) to suspend the sanctions imposed by UEFA against clubs and national teams from Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine.

With that, Russian teams remain excluded from European competitions until there is a final decision on the FUR’s appeal, while the TAS promised to give an answer by the end of the week on a possible suspension of sanctions imposed by FIFA.

The affected teams are Spartak Moscow, which remains excluded from the Europa Leagueand Russia’s women’s team, out of Euro 2022, unless the final decision comes before the tournament, which starts in June.

“The CAS arbitration process continues. The parties have not reached an agreement on an expedited process and a hearing has not yet been scheduled,” the court said.

On February 28, in a joint statement, FIFA and Uefa decided to exclude Russian teams from international competitions due to the invasion of Ukraine, following the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

For Russian football, the harshest sanction was the exclusion of the men’s team from the 2022 World Cup, even before the European qualifiers’ play-off.
