Sports Minister Huddleston: Medvedev may be denied participation in Wimbledon
British Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston has not ruled out that Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev will be denied participation in Wimbledon 2022. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
Huddleston said that the UK government is already discussing with the organizers of Wimbledon the procedure for allowing athletes to the tournament. “Not a single person who competes under the flag of Russia should be allowed to compete,” he said. The Minister of Sports considered it necessary to figure out how to treat individual sports stars from Russia, such as Medvedev.
On March 13, Medvedev spoke about the fairness of the participation of Russian tennis players in international tournaments. He stated that he will play for himself and the fans as long as he has the opportunity. The tennis player stressed that the Russians participate in international tournaments in a neutral status.
On March 1, the Association of Tennis Professionals announced that it would allow the Russians to compete in a neutral status. According to RIA Novosti, because of this, Medvedev was forced to remove the Russian flag from the profile description on Instagram.
