O Barcelona saw the salary limit imposed by the organization of the Spanish Championshipcompared to the calculation made in September last year, while Real Madrid remains with the team with the biggest positive margin.
Ahead of the Catalan team, the merengue club maintained its limit at 739 million euros (R$ 4.1 billion at the current price), according to the balance sheet released by LaLiga this Monday, after the update with figures from the window of January transfers.
Barça, immersed in a very delicate financial situation, had its salary cap dropped by 70% compared to January 2021, from €382 million to €97 million.
The new drop is explained by the losses recorded by the club, greater than predicted by LaLiga in September, in the last calculation.
“In the case of Barcelona, 242 million euros less in losses were estimated”, explained the executive director of LaLiga, Javier Gómez, at a press conference.
“The balance is negative because Barcelona’s losses are greater than its ability to generate resources,” added Gómez, who made it clear that the club needs to generate fears and record profits to improve its limit.
Updated several times throughout the season, the salary cap is the amount clubs can spend on professional team players, coach, assistant coach and physical trainer, in addition to youth spending and other expenses.
Limited hiring capacity
The salary cap is calculated based on the difference between income (advertising, sponsorship, TV quotas, etc) and structural expenses (employee salaries, operating costs, purchase of players, etc).
Therefore, “clubs that are in the red can sign players as long as they cut their expenses”, recalled Gómez.
Clubs that exceed their salary limit can only dedicate 25% of the amounts saved or profits to transfers, until they get out of this situation.
“This means that the club will have its conditions limited not only this season, but also the following ones, unless it generates more revenue or makes a profit,” explained Gómez.
In this way, Barcelona were able to sign forwards Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Adama Traoré in the last transfer window, and Brazilian winger Daniel Alves.
In these negotiations, only in one, that of Ferran Torres, the Catalan club had to pay 55 million euros (about R$ 309 million at the current price) to Manchester City, while Aubameyang and Daniel Alves arrived free of charge and Traoré came on loan. .
The renewal of defender Samuel Umtiti with a salary reduction, the departure of striker Sergio Aguero and the loan of Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho to Aston Villa gave Barcelona oxygen to sign.
On the other hand, Real Madrid remains the club with the highest positive margin in the salary cap. Then comes Sevilla, which has had a slight drop from 200 million euros to 199 million since September. The third biggest margin belongs to Atlético de Madrid, with 161 million euros.
