Tirreno-Adriatico: Alexander Cepeda and Jonathan Caicedo complete the race, whose two-time champion is Tadej Pogacar | Other Sports | sports

The Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) conquered the Tirreno-Adriatico for the second consecutive year this Sunday, at the end of a week of racing that he completely dominated to confirm his impressive start to the season, while the Ecuadorians Alexander Cepeda (Drone Hopper-Androni Giocattoli) and Jonathan Caicedo (EF Education-EasyPost) managed to finish the competition even though they were out of stellar positions..

Cepeda finished in 30th place, +19:56 behind the winner (27:25:53), while Caicedo was 66th with a difference of +43:50.

Tour de France winner Pogacar had already swept the Strade Bianche a week ago.

The general classification of the Race of the Two Seas did not change this Sunday after the 7th and final stage, won in a sprint by the German Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain) on the Adriatic coast, in San Benedetto del Tronto.

Pogacar, 23, retained his crown with authority, solid in the inaugural individual time trial (3rd) and unrivaled to win the two most difficult stages, on Thursday in Bellante and then on Saturday on the slopes of Monte Carpegnawhere Eddy Merckx had shone during the Giro d’Italia in 1973.

Less than a week before the classic Milan-San Remo, the first ‘monument’ of the year, the new ‘cannibal’ of the peloton already has seven wins to his credit this year after having shone on the UAE Tour (two stages and final victory) and have flown on the roads of sterrato from the Strade Bianche.

“As a team we did a great job, I’m very happy to win”, commented the double winner of the Tour de France, just before receiving again the trident of Neptune that accredited him as the winner of the test that day.

Other Ecuadorians in the race were Richard Carapaz and Jhonatan Narváez, both from Ineos Grenadiers. The former did not start on stage 5 due to illness, while the latter crashed on stage 6 and retired. (D)
