Former British world number one Andy Murrayannounced on Tuesday that he would make a donation to Unicef from his tournament winnings until the end of the tennis season, as part of a call for donations for Ukraine.
“I will donate my prize winnings for the rest of the year”, the winner of three Grand Slam tournaments posted on Twitter. “But anyone in the UK can support UNICEF’s humanitarian response by answering our call to donate.”
In the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on Tuesday registered more than two million refugees fleeing from Ukraine.
“Over seven and a half million children are at risk from the escalating conflict in Ukraine, which is why I am working with @UNICEF_uk to help early childhood development”, added the 34-year-old player, number 88 in the world.
“It is essential that education continues, Unicef strives to allow displaced children access to education and support for the rehabilitation of damaged schools, as well as the replacement of their equipment and furniture”.
Murray recently selected as coach Ivan Lendleight-time Grand Slam winner, who returns to lead the Briton after having done so twice in the past, having guided him to his three major titles, before suffering serious hip problems. (D)
