UEFA President Čeferin took pity on the athletes and said that sanctions against Russia are necessary
President of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Aleksander Ceferin spoke about the sanctions against Russia. He is quoted by Corriere della Serra.
“Sanctions are necessary: this is not a political but a humanitarian crisis. I’m sorry to offend Russian athletes, but we must show ourselves as united, ”he said. The head of UEFA concluded that breaking the contract with Gazprom was the right thing to do, despite the fact that it was expensive.
Čeferin said he had warned the Russian Football Union (RFU) before announcing the decision. “I’m not a coward, I don’t do anything in secret. We are not influenced by politicians, but politics is a part of life and we can influence it because we have the support of many,” he explained.
On February 28, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and UEFA announced the exclusion of Russian teams and clubs from international tournaments. Thus, the Russian team lost its chances to participate in the 2022 World Cup, and Spartak Moscow could not play in the 1/8 finals of the Europa League.
