The National Hockey League (NHL) has suspended contacts with representatives of the Continental Hockey League (KHL). This is reported by the Daily Faceoff.
On March 7, the NHL notified the KHL of the suspension of the leagues’ Memorandum of Understanding. The NHL demanded that the clubs stop direct and indirect contacts with representatives of the KHL teams. NHL teams will not be able to sign free agents from the KHL as easily as before, although they will retain the very possibility if hockey players are free from contractual obligations.
The Daily Faceoff emphasized that it is not yet clear how the NHL decision will affect the upcoming draft. According to the publication’s sources, American and Canadian clubs may refuse to sign contracts with Russian players due to possible visa problems.
On March 1, the NHL suspended the broadcast of league matches in Russia. This decision was made against the backdrop of a special military operation of the RF Armed Forces on the territory of Ukraine.
