FIFA announces possibility of suspension of contracts of foreign athletes in Ukraine and Russia

FIFA announced on Monday a temporary change to its player transfer regulations. In the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the organization said that, in agreement with UEFA, the contracts of all foreign employees in the aforementioned countries may be temporarily suspended.

“All employment contracts of foreign players and coaches with clubs affiliated with the Ukrainian Football Association will be considered automatically suspended until the end of the season in Ukraine, without the need for any action by the parties to this effect,” reads the text published on the website of the Ukrainian Football Association. fifa

With the decision, foreign athletes will have the possibility to sign with other teams until the end of the Ukrainian and Russian seasons, which end on June 30, 2022. The change opens the door to possible signings of clubs from Brazil. That’s because many players from the country play for Ukrainian teams, especially Shakhtar Donetsk.

Football’s governing body explained that the suspension of contracts will mean that players and coaches will be “out of contract” until the end of June. Those working in Russia, on the other hand, if they do not reach agreements with their respective teams by Thursday, will be able to “unilaterally suspend their employment contracts” until the end of the season.

FIFA also announced that athletes will be able to be registered in their new teams until after the period previously stipulated by the leagues. However, “in order for this exception to apply and protect the integrity of the competitions”, registration must take place no later than April 7th. In addition, clubs will be allowed to sign up to two players under this context.

Finally, in the statement, FIFA took a stand against the invasion, stating that it “would like to reiterate its condemnation of the continued use of force by Russia in Ukraine and calls for a rapid cessation of hostilities and a return to peace”.
