The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) opened a file on Russian gymnast Ivan Kuliak for his “outrageous behavior” at the World Cup in Doha last week, in which he competed with the ‘Z’ on your country’s tanks that have invaded Ukraine and that represents victory.
Kuliak taped a ‘Z’ to the front of his competition uniform, across his chest, where the Russian flag should have been. In compliance with international sanctions on Russian sport, gymnasts could only compete without their national symbols.
In a challenge to the rules, Kuliak, who was a bronze medalist in the parallels, a test won by the Ukrainian Illia Kovtun, competed and climbed on the podium with the ‘Z’, did not shake hands with Kovtun and tried to get out of the joint photo of the medalists, until he was forced to appear.
The FIG has transferred the case to the Foundation for Ethics in Gymnastics to open a file and, at the same time, has tightened its sanctions on Russia and Belarus: no athlete, coach or judge of these nationalities will be able to participate in FIG competitions until new notification. (D)
