FIFA issues statement on beating in Mexico: “Unacceptable and intolerable”

FIFA issued a statement on Sunday saying it was shocked by the images of violence between supporters of Querétaro and Atlas, from Mexico, last Saturday. In the note, he said he was in contact with Concacaf and the Mexican Football Association to quickly hold those responsible to account.

Still, the entity wrote that “violence is unacceptable and intolerable” and that “it has no place in football”.

According to the Civil Protection of the state of Querétaro, at least 26 people were injured in a widespread fight between Querétaro and Atlas fans during a match valid for the ninth round of the Clausura tournament of Mexican football.

On the other hand, in videos and images that have been circulating on social media since last night, people appear seriously injured being beaten and robbed, naked, by rival fans. In other materials, families run on the lawn with children to try to escape the fight.

Check out the full statement below:

FIFA is shocked by the tragic incident that took place at the La Corregidora stadium in the city of Querétaro during the game between Querétaro and Atlas. The violence was unacceptable and intolerable.

FIFA is in contact with the Mexican Football Association and Concacaf to condemn this barbaric incident and to encourage local authorities to apply swift justice to those responsible. Our thoughts are with all those who suffered the consequences.

Once again, FIFA would like to emphasize that violence should have absolutely no place in football and we will continue to work in all sectors to eradicate it from our game.
