Fight between fans leaves 22 injured in Mexican championship match

At least 22 people were injured on Saturday in a widespread fight between fans during the match between Querétaro and Atlas, valid for the ninth round of the Clausura tournament of Mexican football in the city of Querétaro.

“After the events that took place this Saturday afternoon, there are no reports of people dead, 22 people injured, two of them in a serious condition,” announced the Civil Protection of the state of Querétaro hours after the suspension of the match at the “La Corregidora” stadium.

The fight in the stands between the two fans started in the 18th minute of the second half, when Atlas beat Querétaro 1-0.

Unable to stop the fight, the few security personnel at the stadium allowed access to the pitch so that people could get some protection.

With the invasion, the game was suspended and the players ran to the locker rooms. The pitch started to get crowded: some people, including families with children, were looking for a safe place, while other fans took the violence onto the pitch.

The stadium’s VAR equipment was destroyed.

Liga MX (Mexican first division) announced the suspension of the match and games that were scheduled for Sunday. He also promised severe punishment for those responsible for the lack of security in the stadium.

Both clubs condemned the violence and demanded an investigation.

The governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri, said that the “company that owns the local club and the institutions will have to answer for the facts”.
