Two-time world champion Irina Slutskaya assessed the likelihood of Russian skaters moving under the flag of another country. She is quoted by Sports Day by Day.
“I don’t think so. Athletes who cannot break through in our country and just want to take part in international competitions are thinking about changing citizenship, ”Slutskaya doubted.
She noted that she could not advise the skaters in this situation. Slutskaya added that the season is over in any case and we need to wait for the start of the next one.
On March 1, the International Skating Union (ISU) announced a ban on participation in competitions under its auspices for Russian and Belarusian athletes. The suspension affected figure skaters, skaters and short track skaters. “The Union will continue to closely monitor the situation in Ukraine and its impact on the activities of the ISU and, if necessary, will take additional steps,” the organization noted. The decision was made based on the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
