The Ecuadorian Under 17 women’s team gave the big surprise, this Thursday night, by defeating the local Uruguay 2-1 at the Charrúa stadium in Montevideo, in their second game of the South American category.
The southerners dominated the actions from start to finish, to the point of leading the locals 2-0, for much of the match.
The goals were scored by Lía Rodríguez at 18 minutes and María Mayorga at 65. For the Uruguayans, Julieta Morales discounted at 88.
Ecuador had just lost 1-0 to Chile in the first game of the competition, while Uruguay debuted with a 1-0 win against Peru.
The victory of the youth women caused a four-way tie with three points between Uruguay, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador, while Peru closes the classification after receiving a 7-0 thrashing by Colombia.
The three points serve Ecuador to fight for its classification to the semifinals in which three quotas will be distributed to the World Cup of the category.
