FIFA is advancing dialogues in search of agreements to change the international football calendar, with a biennial World Cup as the central point.
The Council of the Conmebol “returned” to analyze at their meeting this Wednesday in Luque, Paraguay, the proposal to hold the World Cup every two years, a possibility that, according to a statement, he “rejects” as he does not find “justification.”
“There are no reasons, benefits or justification for the change promoted by FIFA”, to hold the highest event in world football every two years, said the entity.
With this position, the rector of South American football emphasized that “The ten countries that make up Conmebol are ratified in that will not participate in a World Cup organized every two years”.
Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, advanced that his body only will implement changes in the international calendar and will implement the proposal “Only if it benefits everyone”, something that has no hold among South American football.
To say of the Conmebol, the FIFA project “turns its back on almost 100 years of world football tradition, ignoring the history of one of the most important sporting events on the planet ”.
Accordingly, the organization pointed out that “Supports the World Cup currently in force, with its deadlines and qualification systems”, which entered into force from the tie to the 1998 event in France.
For Conmebol, this model has proven “to be successful, based on sporting excellence and that rewards effort, talent and planned work ”.

To deal with possible changes in the international calendar, the FIFA convened a global summit with all the federations for next December 20, a quote in which Infantino announced that “an agreement is possible.” (D)
