Ivan Savvidis, 62, made his fortune in the tobacco industry and was once a deputy in Russia for Vladimir Putin’s political party, United Russia. The businessman announced that he will make available to refugees the 487 rooms of his complex in Porto Carras, in Chalkidiki, in northern Greece.
In addition, Savvidis said he is in contact with the Greek government, which is currently leading an operation to evacuate Greek citizens from the combat zone in Mariupol, in southern Ukraine, which is the target of an invasion by the Russian army.
Last month, the businessman was sentenced to 25 months in prison, with suspension from serving the sentence, for having invaded the pitch armed with a revolver and confronted the referee during a match in the Greek Championship in 2018. Savvidis appealed the sentence, but is banned from all competition stadiums for three years for that incident.
Currently, the Greek government is trying to control violence in the country’s football and has suspended the activities of all organized supporters until the end of July.
