The International Olympic Committee (IOC) explained the recommendation to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in competitions. It is reported by TASS.
The IOC said that their recommendation is not directed against Russian athletes who are not involved in the violation of the Olympic truce. They argue that the sanctions are addressed to the government of the country and introduced to ensure the fairness of the competition and the safety of all participants.
On February 28, the IOC called for the non-admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions. The decision was made against the backdrop of a special Russian military operation in the Donbass.
After that, sports federations imposed sanctions on domestic athletes. In particular, Russia was left without international competitions in football, volleyball, hockey and biathlon.
