On Sunday, FIFA announced the imposition of sanctions on Russia. However, they did not include the most important and the most awaited by the world: the expulsion of Russian teams from international competitions. There was, however, information about the change of the band’s name and the inability to perform under its own flag and anthem. The Russians were also supposed to play home games on neutral ground without the participation of the public.
FIFA’s decision has met with heavy criticism. Already on Monday afternoon, the Reuters agency announced that on the same day the world federation will issue another statement in which it will announce further sanctions.
Russia suspended by FIFA and UEFA!
And that’s what happened. that he and UEFA suspend Russian teams from international competitions. This means that the Russia-Poland play-off match for promotion to the world championship will not take place! It is not known whether the Poles will immediately advance to the final, in which they will play with the winner of the Sweden-Czech Republic pair, or whether FIFA will assign her another rival in place of the Russians.
“The world of football is in full solidarity with the aggrieved parties in Ukraine. The presidents of both federations hope that the situation in Ukraine will change quickly so that football can once again be a vehicle of unity and peace between people” – reads the official statement on the FIFA website.
The decision, which was also introduced by UEFA, will affect, inter alia, Spartak Moscow. The team that played with Legia Warszawa in the Europa League advanced to the 1/8 finals, where they were to play against RB Leipzig. It is also not known what will happen to the Russian football players, which were to play at the European championship in England in July.
Interestingly, UEFA also decided to break off long-term cooperation with Gazprom. The Russian giant sponsored the FIFA and UEFA competitions, including the World Cup and the Champions League. UEFA’s decision takes effect immediately and applies to all its tournaments.
This is another decision hitting Russian sport on Monday. On that day, the IOC also excluded athletes from Russia and Belarus from its ranks, the FIVB took away the World Volleyball Championships from Russia, and basketball clubs from that country were suspended from international competitions.
