IIHF suspended Russia and Belarus from international matches

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from participating in international matches. This was reported on the website of the organization.

The restriction is imposed for an indefinite period. In addition, Russia will not host the World Youth Championships in Novosibirsk and Omsk in 2023. This decision was made by the IIHF Council during an emergency meeting.

The restriction applies to national teams of all age categories. It will also apply to professional clubs. In particular, the Belarusian “Gomel” will not be able to take part in the Continental Cup, which will be held from 4 to 6 March.

The IIHF explained the decision as a desire to ensure the safety of athletes and officials. In addition, the federation stressed that the Russian side violated the Olympic truce by launching a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine.
