Russians attacked in Zakopane. FIS against the wall. Poland sets an ultimatum

The invasion of Ukraine, which has been going on since Thursday, caused a lot of reaction in the world of sport. Most of them are gestures of support for Ukraine and condemnation of Russia, or appeals to international federations for reactions regarding sanctions against the aggressor.

Poland sets the FIS ultimatum. He will cancel the JWJ, if the Russians can play in them

Sports activists and the players themselves are reacting to Russia’s actions. Kamil Stoch also made an eloquent gesture on Sunday. The Polish ski jumper wrote in English “Stop the war. Better fight in sport” and he performed in the qualification for the Sunday individual competition in Lahti.

However, the activists of the International Ski Federation remain passive. “The Russians will be able to compete under their own name and for their country,” reads the statement. Later in the announcement, the FIS emphasizes that there will be no Russian flag and anthem at official ceremonies, such as decoration ceremonies. Instead, a flag and an anthem will appear. The full version of the announcement can be read here (under “update”) – we read in the federation’s Friday announcement.

However, more and more ski unions do not want to compete with the Russians. The Norwegians are pressing to exclude Vladimir Putin’s compatriots from the upcoming World Cup competition. The FIS does not want to agree to this. The situation is similar in Poland, which is organizing this week. PZN has been talking to the world federation for several days, but it does not find understanding.

An ultimatum in this matter was set on Monday by the Polish minister of sport, Kamil Bortniczuk, who in an interview with the portal informed that Poland would not organize ski jumping and nordic combined competition in the starting junior world championships in Zakopane, if Russian athletes took part in them.

– There is no place in youth sports either to tolerate the participation of the aggressor’s athletes. We have already sent a letter to the FIS so that the Russians do not start in – explained Bortniczuk.

– PZN is of the opinion that in the face of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, Russian representatives should not take part in competitions. We are lobbying very actively to exclude Russians from any competition at the international level in all disciplines under the aegis of the FIS. We have involved the Ministry of Sport in this, and there is also ongoing pressure at this level, said Jan Winkiel, the secretary in an interview with.

The first competition as part of the junior world championship in Zakopane is to be held on March 2. Then Norwegian combinators and combinators will compete for medals. On Monday, trainings in combination, in which the representatives competed, started.

As reported on Twitter by MichaƂ Chmielewski, a TVP Sport journalist, an incident with Russian athletes was to take place in the capital of the Polish Tatra Mountains on Monday. – Russian staff members were to be attacked in one of the stores in Zakopane. I am talking about a group that came to Poland to start in the junior ski world championships. They also have to move out of COS. The FIS is to take a position on the ultimatum of Minister Bortniczuk by the end of the day – wrote Chmielewski.
