Russia’s aggression against Ukraine shook the world. By decision of Vladimir Putin, Russian troops attacked Ukraine from several sides. The toughest fighting is for Kiev, which was attacked from Belarus.
A series of sanctions against Russia
Russia’s aggression is facing an increasing number of sanctions, which have been decided by UEFA, among others. The organization decided to withdraw the right to organize the final of this year’s edition, which was to be held in St. Petersburg. In addition, it was agreed that all domestic matches of the Russians should be played on a neutral ground.
Sanctions against Russia are also demanded by the International Olympic Committee, which called on all sports federations to decide to cancel or transfer any sports competitions that were ultimately held in and in Russia.
The minister of sport rejects such proposals
The Executive Council also called for the Russian and Belarusian flags not to be displayed at all international events that have not yet been subject to sanctions by the World Anti-Doping Agency () against Russia. In addition, it was noted not to play the national anthems of both countries. These rules already apply to WADA sanctioned events.
Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matykin responded to these reports. – We accepted the IOC’s decision with great disappointment. We consider these recommendations to be inadequate. Their implementation will violate the rights of Russian athletes. The IOC should remain the guarantor of the unity of the international sport movement and counteract the politicization of sport. We will defend the rights of our athletes. This is an absolute priority for us – said Matycin quoted by the TASS agency.
