The aggression against Ukraine has been going on since Thursday morning. Fighting with the invaders is ongoing almost all over the territory of the Ukrainian state, and Russian bombs are falling not only on military but also civilian targets. Sports games have fallen into the background, but due to the war on the next world and national federations, they are forced to make decisions about the next sports events.
The Finns are considering coming to Zakopane. “Security analysis”
They are undecided about the World Junior Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Championships in Zakopane. Officially, it is not known whether their team will appear at the event starting in Poland on Monday, February 28 and lasting until March 6.
“We are investigating the situation in. The team has been appointed, and the players are preparing for the competition planned for next week. We will make decisions about the trip after conducting a safety analysis” – reads the Finnish Ski Association’s statement.
The Japanese postponed the day of their arrival in Poland. The Finns are implementing everything as planned
We contacted a member of the staff of the Finnish junior national team who confirmed to us that so far everything has been going according to plan. It looks as if the team was going to the world championship and our interlocutor doubts that the Finns will not take part in the event in the end.
We also got information that not only Finland was considering coming to the JWC. They delayed their arrival to Poland for a day – they will appear, as initially planned, on Saturday and on Sunday. This was due to an inquiry their federation addressed to the state authorities.
Other teams may think that it is dangerous in Poland. There may be more fears, like those of the Finns
This situation shows one thing: from the perspective of other countries, the Russian invasion of Ukraine changed the perception of Poland in foreign cadres and sports unions in terms of security. The fact that the Finns were not convinced to come to Poland for the Junior World Championships in Zakopane shows that not only the events in Russia and Ukraine may be endangered in the future.
Is it really not safe in Poland anymore? From the Polish perspective, there is no real, immediate threat yet, but there is a war going on just across the border, so it is not surprising that the perception of the situation may be different outside of Poland. The Finns may be followed by other national unions that are to come to Poland soon. This may be an example of a situation that will repeat itself more often in the coming weeks.
