HRC member Eva Merkacheva considers the possibility of returning the death penalty in Russia categorically unacceptable. Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev hinted at such a development of events in connection with the exclusion of Russia from the Council of Europe. Despite the suspension of the country’s rights in the Council of Europe, it remains a member of the organization and a party to its conventions.

In an interview with the radio station “Moscow speaking”, Eva Merkacheva said that such statements indicate a return to the past. “Such statements, especially from the lips of Medvedev, are a disaster, because the return of the death penalty is a huge step back, to the Middle Ages,” the human rights activist says.

She noted that the effectiveness of such a measure of punishment on the impact of crime has not been proven. “Given the very low quality of our investigation, any person can be brought under an article and shot. To say that I am horrified is to say nothing, ”the HRC member said.

Senator Andrei Klishas, in a commentary for RIA Novosti, recalled that the moratorium on the death penalty in Russia will remain in force, since it was introduced by the constitutional court, no authority has the right to overcome the position of the Constitutional Court.
