The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has called on sports federations to cancel or reschedule competitions from Russia and Belarus. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
According to the statement of the organization, the countries violated the Olympic truce. The IOC does not plan any events on their territory and gives absolute priority to the safety of athletes.
The IOC Executive Board also urged sports federations not to fly flags or include the anthems of Russia and Belarus in all competitions. Possible sanctions for demonstrating the state symbols of countries were not discussed.
Earlier on February 25, the management of Formula 1 decided to cancel the Grand Prix stage in Sochi. “Formula 1, the teams and the International Automobile Federation discussed the situation and came to the joint conclusion that holding the stage in Russia under the current conditions is impossible,” the statement said.
Also, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), following an emergency meeting of the executive committee, made a number of decisions against the backdrop of Russia’s military operation. One of them was the transfer of the Champions League final from St. Petersburg to Paris. In addition, matches between Russian and Ukrainian teams will be held at neutral stadiums.
