The Russian Ministry of Sports reacted to the decision of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to deprive St. Petersburg of the right to host the Champions League final in the 2021/2022 season. This was reported on the website of the department.
The Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation expressed its regret in connection with the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee. The ministry said in a statement that sport should not become a means of manipulation and infringement of interests.
Earlier, UEFA, following an emergency meeting of the executive committee, made a number of decisions against the backdrop of Russia’s military operation. One of them was the transfer of the Champions League final from St. Petersburg to Paris. In addition, matches between Russian and Ukrainian teams will be held at neutral stadiums.
The Champions League final in Russia was held once. In 2008, the decisive match took place at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow. Then Manchester United beat Chelsea and became the winner of the tournament.
