FIFA suspends Kenya and Zimbabwe federations over government interference in operations

The Kenyan and Zimbabwean football federations have been suspended by FIFA due to government interference in their operations. The announcement was made by the International Federation on Thursday.

“Without prejudice to investigations by national authorities or other jurisdictional bodies, the FIFA Council has decided to suspend the Kenya Football Federation and the Zimbabwe Football Federation with immediate effect due to undue influence by third parties,” the body explained in a statement.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino elaborated on the reasons for these suspensions. He spoke at a press conference about “government interference in the activities of the football federation”.

“They know what they need to do to get the suspension lifted,” he said.

The entity met briefly in a videoconference without taking important steps on the project to reform international calendars. They considered a possible World Cup every two years, an idea defended by Infantino, but criticized especially by the European and South American federations.
