Arsenal are classified for the quarter finals of the English League Cup. This Tuesday, the team led by coach Mikel Arteta beat Leeds United by 2-0, at Emirates Stadium, and guaranteed the classification.
After a goalless first half, the hosts opened the scoring nine minutes into the second stage. Second after taking the field in place of Ben White, Calum Chambers took advantage of Nicolas Pépé’s touch after a corner kick to head into the small area. Goalkeeper Meslier even made the save, but the ball had already crossed the line.
At 23, it was Edward Nketiah’s turn to take advantage of a flaw in the visiting defense to expand. After weak head recoil from defender Liam Cooper, the striker was left alone facing the goal, gave a hat to Meslier and completed to the empty goal.
Classified, Arsenal is waiting for the definition of the other round of 16 matches to know who they will face in the English League Cup. The London team returns to the field on Saturday to face Leicester, away from home, in the English Championship.
Leeds will visit Norwich on Sunday. The duel is direct in the fight against relegation, as Marcelo Bielsa’s team appears in 17th place, while the Canaries occupy the lantern.
Chelsea beat Southampton on penalties
Chelsea was also guaranteed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the English League Cup this Tuesday. At Stamford Bridge, the Blues tied 1-1 with Southampton in normal time, but triumphed 4-3 on penalties.
The hosts went ahead with Kai Havertz, heading in the 43rd minute of the first half after a corner kick by Ziyech. The advantage, however, was short-lived, as Che Adams equalized in the first minute of the second stage, taking advantage of goalkeeper Kepa’s failure after Tella’s low shot.
With equality, Chelsea pressed in search of victory, but stopped at goalkeeper Forster. With that, the classification had to be defined from the penalty shootout. Forster defended the charge from Mason Mount, but Walcott and Smallbone wasted and gave the spot to the London club.
Sunderland also advanced on penalties on Tuesday. After a goalless draw, the English third division team defeated Queens Park Rangers 3-1 in the penalty shootout.
