CEV reacts to Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine. The Poles’ match has been moved? We have a statement

The attack has left the world of sport wondering about the possible consequences of this aggression. One of them is the possibility of transferring important events from Russia to other countries. The volleyball community thought about such a scenario in the context of this year’s volleyball players, which will take place in Russia at the turn of August and September.

The FIVB does not intend to transfer the Russian volleyballers’ World Cup. What about matches in European cups?

Already on Tuesday, she told the Russian agency TASS that she does not intend to make any sudden decisions on this matter and has no plans to move the event elsewhere. However, this is still quite a distant event, and there are some that are to take place in the next dozen or so days and may be much more endangered.

It is about matches, the Champions League and the CEV Cup organized by the European Volleyball Federation (CEV). As many as five pairs in all of the competitions mentioned above will meet in Russia at the beginning of March.

Planned matches of the European volleyball cups, which are to be held in March in Russia:

  • Zenit Kazan – Modena (CEV Men’s Cup semi-final, March 2)
  • Zenit Saint Petersburg – Sir Safety Perugia (Champions League quarter-final, March 8-10)
  • Dynamo Kazan – Dynamo Moscow (Champions League quarter-final, March 8-10 and March 15-17, rematch in Moscow)
  • Lokomotiv Kaliningrad – Fenerbahce (Champions League quarter-final, March 8-10)
  • Dynamo Moscow – Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle (quarter-finals of the Champions League, 15-17 March)

ZAKSA’s match in the Champions League has been moved? Świderski: I am waiting for the guidelines

From the Polish perspective, the issue of the quarter-finals of the Champions League with Dynamo Moscow is especially important. We asked both interested clubs if they were in contact and if it was possible to move the rematch in Russia. Dynamo and ZAKSA did not answer our questions about the aggregate issue.

The president of the Polish Volleyball Federation, also asked FIVB and CEV about the aggregate match. – The first game of Kędzierzyn-Koźle is playing at home. So there will be some time until the trip to Russia. However, this does not change the fact that the rival team would have to appear in Poland. We do not know at the moment what the sanctions will be and whether the team from Moscow will be able to come at all. It is difficult for me to confirm anything now, because I am waiting for the guidelines myself – he said.

This is how CEV reacts to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. “It has been proven many times that sport can connect people”

Sport.pl also asked for a comment. The federation sent us a brief statement. “Despite the circumstances, we would like to continue our support and promotion of the unifying power of sport in general, and volleyball in particular. As has been proven many times, and has recently been shown by players competing at the Beijing Olympics, sport can connect people. That is why we intend to continue safely delivering volleyball experiences. , beach volleyball and snowvolley [siatkówką na śniegu – red.] in Europe, while caring for cooperation, solidarity and common respect among all members of our volleyball family “- we read in the release.

We asked about concrete possible actions regarding matches played in Russia, so CEV gave a rather laconic answer, which does not indicate whether the federation is already considering changes in the organization of these matches.

CEV has already suspended its first matches. But in Ukraine

However, CEV has already made the first decision related to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine – together with the Ukrainian Volleyball Federation it has suspended the organization of the CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour tournament in snowvolley in Truskavets until further notice. This one was scheduled for February 25-27. The European federation ensures that the event will take place, but later.

Will there be any organizational changes for matches scheduled in Russia? At the moment it seems unlikely, but the matter until the games are played will be a high-profile topic.
