Felipe Caicedo, three games as a substitute in an Inter that has gone on a losing streak

Felipe Caicedo stayed for the third consecutive game on the Inter Milan substitute bench, this Sunday at the San Siro, in a 26th date of the Italian Serie A that was totally negative for the men of coach Simone Inzaghi due to the 0-2 defeat against Sassuolo.

Wearing number 88, the Ecuadorian striker waited for his opportunity on the bench, while Inzaghi hoped to return to the path of victory starting in the attacking front with the Chilean Alexis Sánchez and the Argentine Lautaro Martínez. Bosnian Edin Dzeko also started as an alternative and only entered the substitution for the second half.

In the rest of the eleven, Inzaghi put goalkeeper Handanovič as the starting goalkeeper and sent Škriniar, De Vrij, Dimarco, Darmian, Gagliardini, Barella, Çalhanoğlu, Perišić onto the field; Alexis and Lautaro.

Thus, Caicedo accumulated his third meeting as a spectator nerazurisince on February 12 he watched the 1-1 draw at Napoli from the bench, last Wednesday (16) he witnessed the 0-2 defeat against Liverpool at the start of the round of 16 Champions League, and today he watched the very tough 0-2 loss at the hands of Sassuolo, a team that is in the middle of the table with 33 points.

The most ill-advised Inter of the year missed the chance to regain the top spot in Serie A after AC Milan drew at Salerno. Inzaghi’s squad, with the notable losses of Alessandro Bastoni and Croatian Marcelo Brozovic due to suspension, were unable to pierce the Sassuolo goal defended by Andrea Consigli.

The first part was dominated by Sassuolo. Those from Emilia-Romagna knew how to eliminate the high interista pressure, sometimes disorderly, to plant themselves in the rival area with troops and clear ideas.

Domenico Berardi led the attack by the neroverdi and in the 7th minute he assisted his compatriot Giancomo Raspadori, who beat the Slovenian goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, who was not successful.

Little by little Inter was waking up and imposing its rhythm, but at the best moment of the nerazuri Gianluca Scamacca finished off a cross from Ivorian Hamed Traoré with a great header to make it 0-2, ultimately definitive.

Inzaghi brought in the Bosnian Edin Dzeko at the break and kept the Argentinian Martínez and the Chilean Sánchez on the field to turn the team to the attack, aware of the importance of, at least, scoring at home. He also introduced Dutchman Denzel Dumfries to gain more depth down the right lane.

The changes took effect and Inter began to have chances as soon as they started. As the minutes went by, Sassuolo lost physical strength at the back and Inter grew, but there was no way for their attackers to score a goal that could give the locals hope of coming back from the match. Dzeko and Lautaro had them in all colors, but they weren’t right.

Although Sassuolo lost rhythm in the second half, every time they came out with the ball under control it was a danger for the Milanese defense, who saw how once again the figure of the Slovakian Milan Skriniar stood up to impose his great form and stop the offensives rivals, always commanded by Berardi.

With this result, Inter accumulates four of the last five games of the domestic championship without knowing the victory. He lost the derby against AC Milan and was defeated in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Liverpool in what is the worst moment of the season for Inzaghi’s men.

Despite everything, Inter has one less game in Serie A and can still regain the lead thanks to the 1-1 draw between AC Milan and Salernitana on the same day. (D)
