The Colombian Nairo Quintana, from the Arkéa Samsic teamachieved this Sunday the final victory in the Tour of the Maritime Alps and the Var, after exhibiting himself in the third and last stage, disputed over 112.6 km between the French towns of Villefranche-sur-Mer and Blausasc and in which he won alone.
Nairo Quintana reached the final stage as second overall, equal in time with the Belgian Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal)but displayed a display of power on the Col de Saint Roch, in the second category and with 43.5 kilometers to go, to win the stage and the race for the second time after the one achieved in 2020.
At that delicate point of the short stage, the Colombian responded to an attack by the French Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and another of his teammate, also French Nicholas Edett. In the long subsequent descent he left the latter behind to launch himself alone for the victory of the stage and the general classification.
Already in the lead, Quintana had more than a minute on Wellens and the chasing group. And he stood firm to cross the finish line alone and with a 1:21 advantage over the second classified, Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), and 1:30 on the also French Thibaut Pinot (Groupama FDJ) and Alexis Vuillermoz (TotalEnergies) and Wellens himself. He sealed the final victory with an impressive performance.
Nairo Quintana, 32, finished the race 1:30 ahead of Tim Wellens and 1:49 over Guillaume Martin, who did not accumulate enough time to overtake the Belgian in the general classification.
