In a frenetic game, Tottenham beats Manchester City and stokes a fight for the leadership of the Premier League

This Saturday, Manchester City and Tottenham played a breathtaking game in the Premier League. Playing away from home, at the Etihad Stadium, Tottenham went ahead twice and saw the opponent draw, but returned to the lead in stoppage time and won 3-2, in a match played until the final minutes.

First time

With just four minutes into the game, Tottenham took the lead. Ben Davies found Harry Kane who hit a beautiful first pass, in depth, putting Heung Min Son in a rush, face to face with Éderson. The Korean, however, preferred to roll to Kulusevski, who pushed into the empty net and scored his first goal in a Spurs shirt.

After the goal, City put a lot of pressure and took danger in good arrivals from Gundogan and Cancelo. While the home team played in the attack, the visitors took cover and played in search of a fatal counterattack.

In the 32nd minute, Pep Guardiola’s pressure paid off. Sterling crossed in the area and Lloris came out to fit, but he hit the ball at Gundogan’s feet, who took advantage of the goalkeeper’s failure to tie the game. Manchester City continued to press, but the first half ended in a 1-1 draw.

Second time

At the return of the break, the home team continued to play in the attack, squeezing Antonio Conte’s team, who followed in search of an opportunity for a counterattack.

Just when it looked like City would turn the tide, Tottenham scored. In the 14th minute of the second half, after a counterattack, Son received on the left and crossed in the area for Harry Kane to get behind the defense and hit high up, leaving the visitors ahead once again.

In the 27th minute of the second half, Kulusevski received on the wing, risked a shot and, on the left, Kane scored the Spurs’ third. The video referee, however, took action and identified the Ukrainian offside at the beginning of the play, a goal disallowed.

In stoppage time, Romero blocked a cross with his arm and the video referee confirmed a penalty for Manchester City. In the kick, Mahrez hit the angle and secured the tie in the 47th minute of the second half and equalized again.

When everything seemed resolved, another twist. In the 49th minute, Kulusevski received on the right, crossed in the area and Kane appeared to head it and put Tottenham in front again, giving final numbers to the confrontation.

With the result, City remains in the lead, but sees Liverpool approaching and their lead drops from nine to six points. Tottenham are back to winning ways after three defeats in the championship and are in seventh place with 39 points.

Manchester City return to the pitch next Saturday, at 14:30 (GMT), to face Everton away from home. Tottenham, in turn, play on Wednesday, at 16:30, against Burnley, in another commitment as a visitor.
