Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa said injuries at Leeds are no excuse for their poor season and that the club has an “obligation” to remain in the Premier League.
Leeds finished an honorable ninth place last year on their return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence from English football’s elite, but their challenge this season is to hold on.
Injuries took a toll on the Bielsa squad, especially those of England players Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford and captain Liam Cooper.
The permanence is “an obligation”, sentenced Bielsa this Friday. “Injuries don’t justify the season we’re having,” added the 66-year-old, who joined Leeds in 2018 and declined to comment on whether this is his last season in charge.
Leeds, in 15th place before hosting Manchester United on Sunday, are six points clear of the relegation zone.
