Raw Air 2022. Officially: there will be big changes to the tournament and an additional competition

In this year’s women, so far less competitions have been held than originally assumed. Due to pandemic restrictions for visitors in Japan, the competitions in Sapporo and Zao scheduled for January 2022 have been canceled. Some of these losses will, however, be compensated by an additional competition.

Lillehammer will organize an additional World Cup competition as part of the Raw Air series

In distant Japan, four competitions were to be held, two in each and Zao. The canceled competition was taken advantage of by the Norwegians and organized additional competitions at home. On March 2, an additional Women’s World Cup competition will be held in Lillehammer to replace the canceled competition in Sapporo. The competition will be part of this year’s edition of Raw Air.

Lysgaardsbakken (HS140) will host the competition. Interestingly, for the first time in the history of this series, the female edition will consist of more series than the male one. Ladies will take part in twelve series included in the general classification of the series, and gentlemen only in nine.

The organizers increased the prize pool of the women’s Raw Air

This year, ladies will also receive bigger prizes. The prize pool in the women’s Raw Air will amount to EUR 80,000, which is as much as 25,000. more than during the previous edition. This time the winner will receive 45,000, the second player 25,000, and the third will receive 10,000. For men, the prize pool will be 60,000 euros. The winner will receive 35 thousand.

“This strengthens Raw Air’s position as the most important tournament in the skijumping world, also for women,” said StÃ¥le Villumstad, Skijumping Sporting Director and Raw Air Manager of the Norwegian Ski Association.

Let us remind you that last year, due to the pandemic, the tournament could not be organized, and two years ago it was held without the participation of the public. This time it will be different, because the fans will finally be able to appear in the stands. This year’s Raw Air will take off on March 2 and end four days later. The competition will only take place on the Lillehammer ski jumps and as Trondheim is undergoing a major reconstruction of the facilities in connection with the World Cup in 2025, and the ski flying world championships will be held in Vikersund.
