IOC President shared his reaction to Valieva’s speech

President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach said he was shocked by the performance of the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

The head of the IOC explained that he was alarmed by the pressure faced by the 15-year-old figure skater. “And how she fought, no matter what, tried to finish the performance. Her body language said it was incredible mental stress,” Bach shared.

He also added that he was surprised by the cold reception of people around Valieva after her speech.

Earlier, the IOC said that it would not hold an awards ceremony following the results of the women’s individual tournament if Valieva was the winner. The figure skater was admitted to the individual tournament of the Games by the decision of CAS. She placed fourth with 224.09 points.

Valieva’s questionable doping test was reported on 9 February. In this regard, the IOC has postponed the award ceremony following the results of the team tournament of the Olympics. The Russian team, which included Valieva, became the winner in this type of program.
