Rune Herregodts (Sport Vlanderen) won the first stage of the Vuelta a Andalucía 2022 this Wednesday which was played between Ubrique (Cádiz) and Iznájar (Córdoba), with a distance of 200 kilometers, and donned the leader’s jersey.
Herregodts resorted to the epic to win, since together with seven other runners he starred in a 195-kilometre breakaway, and crowned it in a tight finish ahead of Stephen Basset (Human Powered) and Ander Okamika (Burgos BH) who was third. Xabier Isasa (Euskaltel-Euskadi) crossed the finish line in fourth position.
The first four in the stage along with Alvaro Cuadros (Rural Box), Votjech Repa (KernPharma), Lvylder’s indisay (Sport Vlanderen) and Mark Christian (Eolo Kometa), were the protagonists of the day with an attack just after leaving Ubrique that allowed them to shoot alone with the permission of the peloton. In the final stretch of the stage, the group of eight riders fell to sixsince Votjech Repa and Álvaro Cuadros stayed behind.
Herregodts attacked on the final slope and stuck to his Bassett wheel, they even made contact, but in the last meters the Belgian showed strength and won a day of cycling the old-fashioned way with an epic escape.
