US accuses Zero Hedge financial website of spreading Russian propaganda

Intelligence service officials U.S they accused a conservative financial news site called Zero Hedge, which has a significant American readership, of amplifying Kremlin propaganda and alleged that five Ukrainian-targeted media outlets have been instructed by Russian spies.

Officials said the Zero Hedge website, which has 1.2 million Twitter followers, published articles created by Russian government-controlled media that were later shared by news outlets and people unaware of their link to Russian intelligence.

The officials would not say whether they believed Zero Hedge was aware of any links between the articles and spy agencies, and did not say there are any direct links between the website and Russia.

Zero Hedge denied the accusations and maintained that it is only trying to “publish a wide spectrum of points of view that cover both sides of a given story.”

The officials released the information to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity so they could discuss confidential intelligence sources.

It was the latest effort by the administration of President Joe Biden to publish US intelligence findings about Russian activity related to Ukraine as part of a concerted campaign to expose and influence the steps of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier, US officials accused the Kremlin of planning a “false flag” operation to create a pretext for a new invasion of Ukraine and detailed what they believed to be final-stage Russian preparations for an attack.

Those accusations were meant as a justification for the war launched by the United States.

Zero Hedge has been highly critical of Biden and has published allegations of wrongdoing by the president’s son, Hunter. Although perhaps best known for its coverage of markets and finance, the website also covers political affairs, with a conservative bent.

In recent months, Zero Hedge has published numerous articles accusing the United States of fomenting panic over Ukraine, which now faces the possibility of an invasion by more than 130,000 Russian troops concentrated on various sides of the country.
