The figure skater-champion described Valieva’s admission to the Games with the phrase “the spirit of the Olympics has died”

Canadian figure skating Olympic champion Megan Duhamel admitted that she was disappointed by the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to allow Russian Kamila Valieva to participate in the Beijing Olympics. She wrote about it in Twitter.

The 36-year-old ex-athlete wondered if it was possible to take figure skating seriously after the CAS decision. “Basically, we were told that abuse and drugs are the norm. If the sport has become this, I don’t want to have anything to do with it. Today, the spirit of the Olympics has died,” Duhamel condemned the CAS decision.

Earlier, American columnist Christine Brennan spoke about the scandal surrounding the doping test of 15-year-old Valieva at the Beijing Games. She welcomed the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to abandon the figure skating ceremony because of Valieva.

CAS did not uphold the appeals of the IOC and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which sought to remove Valieva from the Games. The athlete is preparing to participate in the personal figure skaters’ tournament. Short and free programs will be held on February 15 and 17.
